| 0:50.7 | could you tell us a little bit about the Population Research Institute you have a very |
| 0:53.9 | interesting career background and maybe get into a bit about how you ended up where you are right now? |
| 1:00.8 | Well I'm not sure you it's a career path that many people would want to follow because I was |
| 1:07.0 | overjoyed to be selected to be the first American social scientist in China back in 1979. I was the first boots on the ground as it were selected by the State Department and the National Security Council. |
| 1:20.0 | But I can read, write, and speak Chinese and I became friends with the local Chinese people and got me in all kinds of trouble because they began telling me tales of woe. |
| 1:30.0 | They began telling me about executions outside of the village during the land reform. |
| 1:35.4 | They began telling me horror stories about the Cultural Revolution. |
| 1:38.4 | And of course I was in the commune when the One Child policy began in 1980 and I saw friends of mine |
| 1:47.0 | men and women who were pregnant with their second child arrested for the crime of being pregnant. |
| 1:56.2 | It had become a crime in March of 1980 to be pregnant with the second or third child or fourth child in Guangdong province, the southern |
| 2:04.5 | province near Hong Kong. And these women were actually arrested, taken |
