Summary

Do we have the right to repair all of our appliances, appliances and things we purchase to help us through life?

In this podcast, Helen talks to Mark Miodownik and he thinks we do and is very passionate about the subject.

And it would appear he isn't the only one.

Professor Mark Miodownik, University College London.

Hello and welcome to the Flee Charge Plus podcast. I'm Helen Chersky and today we are

0:26.9

covering one of those topics that's really important but we don't talk about enough and that is

0:33.0

the right to repair. We live in a world where we're constantly urged to buy lots and lots of new

0:39.4

things and if something breaks we're often told it's just cheaper and easier to buy a new one.

0:44.3

But if you just take a tiny step back it's obvious that that is ridiculous. It's likely that

0:50.4

most of the item like 95 or 99% most of it is just fine it's just one small bit that's broken

0:57.0

and if you fix it we've got a working device again so we don't need to spend the money or time or

1:02.0

energy or the environmental cost of making a whole new thing that's just ridiculous and we

1:07.8

wouldn't have to deal with the waste that the old one has become. So most of us just want a thing

1:12.5

that works but our world has veered off in this weird direction that pushes us to replace devices

1:19.1

and objects and items instead of repairing them and a growing group of people is making a fuss

1:24.4

about it. So this is what the right to repair campaign is all about. It's an absolutely solvable

1:30.8

problem it's about regulation and the way we think about design and innovation and what we choose

1:35.0

to do and it could be a very easy win in building a more sustainable world. I had a great conversation

1:41.9

with Professor Mark Miodovnik who happens to be a colleague in my department at University College

1:46.3

London and he you've probably heard or seen on radio or TV he is properly passionate about this

and I'm sure that after the podcast you will be too. But just before we start here's a word for
