Summary
The seven Republican presidential participants in last night’s debate took aim at each other, President Biden for his perceived failings, and former President Donald Trump for not attending. Across much of human history and in much of the world today, last night’s event would never have occurred. In this light, Dr. Jim Denison considers our cultural fascination with Rome and an urgent parallel between the Rome of old and the America of today.

| 1:12.2 | explains that, quote, ancient Rome is a kind of safe place for macho fantasies. It's where men |
| 1:18.6 | can pretend to be macho men, end quote. Another historian adds that the display of might, especially |
| 1:25.0 | when backed up by color, clamor, and overpowering architecture, |
| 1:28.5 | can be stirring, even thrilling. |
| 1:31.1 | Cultural edifices aside, there is an even more urgent parallel between Rome and America, |
| 1:36.7 | one to which Christians need to respond with passion today. |
