Summary

"School choice" is among the most politicized phrases in America, mainly because it means different things to different people. Charter schools are at the heart of that divisive debate, pitting progressives and conservatives against one another in a shouting match over what "choice" truly means and who deserves to have it. Ravi sits down with Shavar Jeffries, the president of Democrats for Education Reform, to talk about fighting for charter schools, the many progressives who resist school choice, the sweeping influence of teachers unions, and the most important factor in this and all discussions of education: what's best for students. But in these Regressive episodes, I take a step back as somebody who's been a veteran at progressive

campaigns and say, well, how do liberals profess values and practices line up? And where are the out of sync?

And this podcast is dedicated to shining a light on any discrepancies that are there between

0:44.4

those values and practices in the hopes of eliminating them. And today I'm really excited because

0:50.1

my friend Chavar Jeffries is on the podcast. He ran for Mayor of Newark back in the day,

0:54.4

and he's now the president of Democrats for Education Reform and the national president of

0:59.6

education reform now. And he's been pushing for school choice for every child in the U.S.

1:04.3

And in particular, he's been fighting to have a different conversation about what school choice

1:08.6

even means and particularly trying to push progressives

1:11.5

to think critically about the kinds of choice that they exercise versus the kinds of choice

1:17.3

that they're shutting off from kids around the country. And that's a lot of what we talk about

1:21.3

in this podcast, which is like how do we improve our schools and offer options to families,

1:25.4

especially the most vulnerable, while also taking care of our

1:28.1

educators, while also bringing more people to the table and being more inclusive. And so that's what we're

1:33.6

here to talk about. But Chavar is also a hardcore lawyer. He's a super impressive guy who used to run the

1:38.9

class action litigation clinic at Seton Hall. He was a counselor to the Attorney General of the
