Imagine you are in a swimming pool, propelling your body forward as fast as you can.

You started off strong, but now you're starting to slow down.

And the other end of the pool feels very far away.

You grab onto a ledge only halfway down the lane, breathless and tired.

Your father is standing on the deck near the edge of the pool, back where you started.

You're halfway there, keep going.

You shake your head.

But my leg isn't strong enough, I can't make it to the other end.

It wasn't always like this, struggling to keep any momentum in your leg.

You were sick last year with a disease called polio.

It weakened your right leg and stunted its growth.
