The Surprising History of Mother’s Day — and What Its Founder Wanted Us to Remember

Why do we celebrate Mother’s Day? The answer starts with two remarkable American women: Ann Jarvis, a mother who worked to improve health and sanitation in poor Appalachian communities, and her daughter Anna Jarvis, who never had children of her own but helped create one of America’s most recognized holidays.

In this SmartHER News episode originally recorded in 2025, Jenna shares the little-known history of Mother’s Day, from Ann Jarvis’ “Mother Friendship Days” during the Civil War — an effort to help reunite politically divided families — to Anna Jarvis’ national campaign to honor mothers and their role in American life.

In 1914, Congress approved Mother’s Day and President Woodrow Wilson signed it into law, encouraging Americans to display the U.S. flag in honor of mothers. Anna Jarvis also favored carnations, her mother’s favorite flower, as a symbol of the day.

But the story takes a surprising turn: as Mother’s Day quickly became commercialized, Anna Jarvis fought against the holiday she helped create and even pushed to have it rescinded.

Jenna also reflects on modern motherhood, entrepreneurship, flexibility, faith and the grace parents often need — especially during a busy season of life.

Whether you’re celebrating your mom, remembering your mom, hoping to become a mom, or honoring the women who have shaped your life, this story offers a meaningful look at the origins of Mother’s Day and what the holiday was originally meant to represent.

You have inspired me so much to look into American history and to question some of the things that sort of just wash over us on a regular basis.

You know, Mother's Day, what kind of history can Mother's Day have?

0:35.4

It's pretty obvious, right?

0:36.3

We're going to celebrate the moms.

Like, this is a very clear holiday. But the backstory to this holiday is one that has sat

0:43.4

with me for so many years now that I've researched it and each year uncover something a little

0:49.2

something different about it. And what I love most about this story regarding Mother's Day is that it actually

0:56.1

involves trying to soothe divided families and political divisions and celebrating the special

1:04.4

role of a mother in that. So let me take you back to the 1850s, late 1850s. There was a woman by the name Ann Jarvis.

And one of the things she did is she taught health and sanitation to these communities in

1:19.7

Appalachia, so poor communities. And that was one of the roles that she took. She also, though,

1:26.6

quickly changed that role and it evolved

1:29.1

somewhat because suddenly we find ourselves in the middle of the Civil War. And especially in

1:34.3

that part of the country, you could have families fighting families, literally. Cousins,

1:39.5

fighting cousins, extended families, fighting families because of those that associated with the North or the

Union and those that associated with the South or the Confederacy. So we find ourselves in this

time of, I mean, incredible political division. What do you do to try to smooth that over? And one of

1:58.0

the things that Ann Jarvis did is she tried to promote these mother

friendship days as a way of bringing families back together that were divided amongst the
