Summary

Alcohol was ever present in Jessie’s childhood, to the point where it felt like she had two sets of parents: sober parents during the day, and drunk parents at night. Drinking affected each of her parents differently, though, and she was told from a young age that only her father had a drinking problem, because alcohol made him treat others poorly. Once Jessie started drinking at 14, she leaned on this assumption and never questioned her drinking.

As a young adult, Jessie married to a man with an alcohol addiction and became pregnant. Postpartum Depression hit her hard upon having her son, and Mommy Wine Culture seeped in, leading her to rely on alcohol to cope when she didn’t feel comfortable asking for help. As her son got older, though, she began to realize that she didn’t want him to grow up in the same way she did, so she left her husband and tried to start anew.

It wasn’t until Jessie found herself single after a couple more relationships that she began to wonder if her own drinking was a problem. This question led her to the The Sober Mom Life Facebook group! After a long time of lurking, she posted in the group that she just wanted to be sober for one day. The support she got from the community was unexpected, beautiful, and overwhelming. That one day of sobriety turned into two days, which turned into a full week, which has now turned into 6 months of sobriety!

Jessie believes she only succeeded in sobriety with community support. She wants you to know that it is okay to ask for help! If you’re struggling in any way, whether it be with parenting, alcohol, or something else, you are safe to ask for help.
