| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Dividing Cafe, weekly market commentary focused on dividends in your portfolio and dividends in your understanding of economic life. |
| 0:10.0 | Hello and welcome to this Friday's Dividendon Cafe. It has been another historical week, and I'm going to get right into it because there's a lot to talk |
| 0:22.7 | about. And what I really wanted to do today was just get into a refresher of how we handle |
| 0:29.6 | severe market volatility, how to think about these moments in which markets have very quick, |
| 0:37.4 | very violent, and very uncertain in terms of the |
| 0:40.9 | ending downside volatility. Last Thursday, April the 3rd, last Friday, April the 4th, you saw |
| 0:48.8 | significant four-digit declines in markets in the aftermath of the Trump administration's trade announcements. |
| 0:56.0 | And then on Monday, we went down further. It wasn't four digits. So it was a few hundred points. |
| 1:01.0 | Tuesday, again, a few hundred points. The overnight action, Tuesday going into Wednesday, |
| 1:06.0 | looked like another four-digit decline. So I wanted to do a dividend cafe about that moment of a |
| 1:13.6 | bottomless feeling in markets. And when the S&P was down over 20%, the NASDAQ down over 25%, in a |
| 1:21.7 | reasonably short period of time, it wasn't like it was a multi-month, multi-quarter, let alone a couple of year recession. |
| 1:29.8 | Then markets go down that amount, but it's over a longer period of time. You think about |
| 1:34.4 | 2000 and 2002, you think about 1973, 74, thinking about 2007 and 2008. There are these periods |
| 1:42.6 | of economic decline where markets drop a lot over a long period |
| 1:46.4 | of time. But this was more like the week after 9-11, the week of tarp failing, the week of |
| 1:53.7 | the month of the COVID moment five years ago, where you have significant double-digit |
| 1:59.9 | decline in a matter of days, not months, |
| 2:03.3 | quarters, years. And those moments I have a lot to say about, I'm going to address some of it |
| 2:10.4 | today. And let me just get this part out of the way. Things like the VIC. You say, what's the VIX? |
| 2:16.3 | Well, it's a real thing. It's a term that they call |
| 2:19.9 | the fear index that measures the level of volatility that is bought in the options market on a |
