The ducks were quacking. All was well as Derek Jones stubbed out his lunchtime cigarette on the ground and put his rubbish in the bin.

On his way back to work he suddenly felt terribly guilty. But why? What had he done? He was racking

his brains and then he saw it. A duck pointing angrily at his discarded cigarette butt.

You don't think you're a litterer, but cigarette but are rubbish.

If you smoke bin your butts, keep Britain tidy. At Amicalola Falls State Park in Dawsonville, Georgia, you'll find a beautiful stone archway that frames a picturesque trailhead leading off into the rugged southern countryside.

Beside that archway stands a sign that lets you know that if you follow the trail in front of you,

you're 8.5 miles from the peak of Springer Mountain, Georgia.

What's so important about Springer Mountain that its approach

more than eight miles away is worthy of a fantastic piece of stonework and a big sign

letting you know that you've arrived.

Springer Mountain represents the start of the Appalachian Trail,

that majestic nod to the natural beauty of the eastern United States,

a trail that winds its way through 14

of those states and over 2,000 miles until it reaches its northern terminus on the peak of Mount Katadin, the highest mountain in the New

England state of Maine.

The average time to hike the entire trail is just under six months. But the difficult part might be the very end,

actually summiting the foreboding Mount Katadin. Because to do so, it just might bring down the wrath of a capricious and

vengeful deity who claims the mountain as his own.
