The The Of all the characters in a song of ice and fire, there's little doubt,

Patchface is one of the hardest to understand,

both in terms of who he is, what he is, and why he is the way he is. There are elements and aspects

to his character that exist in no other character. Often we learn or understand through comparison, but he is very hard

to compare to other characters, even amongst those very select few who seem to be capable

of seeing the future in some form or fashion. To be unique amongst that group is really saying something.

We'll get into the weeds during the episode, but just one example is he might be the only person that can tell the future that doesn't know he can tell the future.

It's also partly because he breaks and inverts tropes. But, I mean, honestly, George does that a lot.

He's really good at that, so it's not entirely unexpected that he would do it,

but which tropes is he breaking exactly?

That's something we'll get into.

But that also doesn't necessarily separate him from the pack in terms of categorization.

So I'm going to propose, before we get into

the weeds, it's a bit of a thesis statement here during the intro that this is exactly what George was

aiming for, a character that he intentionally made difficult to categorize. Basically, an avatar of how

his views on magic should operate in world, right?

Like, a character that ensures or helps ensure that the supernatural side of things

stays mysterious.

If there's a few characters we can understand, but there's several more that we can't,

then that maintains at least a significant amount of mystery.

Patchface is certainly on the side of, we probably won't ever get all the answers.

Even if we get a dozen deep cut answers on Patchface, that would leave what another dozen
