Fifty years ago, a progressive senator from South Dakota with little experience on Capitol Hill

made a run for the presidency. Democrat George McGovern had a singular issue driving his campaign

ending the war in Vietnam, his campaign suffered a historic defeat to Republican Richard Nixon.

Nixon carried 49 states and became the first Republican to win every state in the South.

McGovern's story is often used as a cautionary tale for candidates pushing their party too far

to the extreme and being too focused on a single issue. After the break, we'll find out how McGovern

transformed the presidential nomination process and take a closer look at his campaign.
