Summary

Emma learned early that some experiences were easier to live with than to explain.

The voice had been with her since childhood—calm, familiar, and so close to her own thoughts that it never felt intrusive. It answered questions. It offered comfort. It listened. For years, she believed it was imagination, then conscience, then something she didn’t need to name at all.

But imaginary friends don’t grow up with you. They don’t ask for new names. They don’t leave to prove a point. They don’t come back sounding certain they’ll always be there.

As Emma moved from house to house and childhood into adulthood, the voice remained. So did the sensations at night—the shift of weight behind her, the feeling of someone settling into a space no one could see. When someone else finally suggested what it might be, the idea didn’t arrive with fear. It arrived with doubt.

Because whatever this was had never screamed, threatened, or demanded worship.

By the time she turned 19, Emma had learned to be careful about what she shared.

Not because she wanted attention and not because

she believed everything she experienced was extraordinary, but because she had learned slowly and

repeatedly that some things were easier to carry alone than to explain to other people. Her life

had never followed a straight line. Her parents were never married, and her father raised her alone

from the time she was very young. He was quiet, distant, and largely withdrawn, the kind of man

who fulfilled responsibilities without inviting closeness. Emma did not grow up with stories about

She grew up moving. Four elementary schools, six apartment complexes, new bedrooms that never

felt fully hers. New neighbors she never learned to trust long enough to miss. She became shy

how to sit quietly, with her own thoughts.

She was four, maybe five, when she first noticed the voice. At the time, she didn't think of it as

when she asked a question and received an answer.
