Summary

Can you imagine a perfect human being? You may say, “Sure.” But perfection would necessarily be surprising to us because we’re not perfect and we’ve actually never seen perfection.  The challenge of the New Testament is to read about Jesus, not just once, but page after page after page. If you do that, you’ll pretty much be forced to the conclusion that nobody could’ve imagined someone like this. So we’re looking now at the miraculous signs to see what they show us about Jesus. This is the third miraculous sign: the healing of the lame man at the pool of Bethesda. Let’s look at 1) the pool, 2) the man, and 3) the Sabbath controversy. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on February 2, 2014. Series: Seeing Jesus. Scripture: John 5:1-18. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. are essential for understanding who he is

and how they invite us to have a deeper trust in him.

Now, there is in Jerusalem near the sheep gate a pool which in Aramaic is called Bethesda,

and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie, the blind, the lame, the paralyzed,

and they waited for the moving of the waters, from time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters.

The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured

1:12.2

of whatever disease they had. One who was there had been an invalid for 38 years. When Jesus

1:18.9

saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him,

1:23.8

do you want to get well? Sir, the invalid replied, I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred.

1:30.9

While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.

1:35.6

Then Jesus said to him, get up, pick up your mat, and walk.

1:41.6

At once the man was cured, he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place

1:47.9

was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, it is the Sabbath. The law

1:53.3

forbids you to carry your mat. But he replied, the man who made me well said to me, pick up your man and walk.

2:02.7

So they asked him, who was this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?

2:07.0

The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd

2:10.7

that was there.
