For years, the story and local politics across the United States has been the same.

Since maybe the 1820s, big city machines have effectively been in control.

And they've used that clout to heavily distort politics at a national level.

Why do we have the Democratic Party that we do today?

Well, it's largely thanks to those untouchable local machines.

But those machines have gotten rusty over the years.

We were done with inside deals and sweetheart deals.

And the things that our stay house had been known for.

That's one of my guests today, Cynthia Mendez,

who just ousted William Conley, Jr.

the Finance Committee Chair in the Rhode Island State Senate.

She's one of a wave of progressive candidates who stunned the party establishment this week in the state's primaries.
