Just the thought of this well-loved holiday might make you think of Turkey and mashed potatoes

and gravy, pumpkin pie, with a big dollop of whipped cream, maybe even green bean casserole,

and all of the other good things in your life that you're thankful for.

It might mean going to grandparents or aunt and uncle's houses for big family get-togethers

But why do we celebrate this day in late November?

Is it just a kickoff for the Christmas shopping season or is there another reason we set aside

this particular day to give thanks?

Well, to answer all of these questions we need to go back in time and across the Atlantic ocean

to England, to the small but important town of Scroobee.

Scroobee is a rural village in the Yorkshire province of England with lush green rolling hills

and coin farms dotting the countryside. It kind of looks like a picturesque land in a storybook.

In the late 1500s and early 1900s a group of people who called themselves

separatists lived in this area. This rather odd name comes from the word separate

and they chose this name because they wished to separate themselves from the Church of England.
