29ers are back, or maybe they never went away. There are so many mountain bike wheel-sized choices on the market today,, but still the 29er is once again in the spotlight.

0:40.8

So we're going to talk a little bit about the history of 29ers and then talk about what's going on today and how that wheel size is trending.

0:49.5

So first off, I want to ask, when did 29ers first start appearing on the market?

0:54.8

So I learned in a video recently that Gary Fisher was actually experimenting with 29-inch wheels and tires way back in the early 80s,

1:02.3

but they didn't have the supply available that they needed in tires or wheels to support that wheel size.

1:08.6

And 26-inch was primarily chosen based on the parts availability

offered by Fisher back in about 2001. And so he really never gave up on the 29er wheel size.

1:43.4

And then in roughly the mid-2000s-ish, the 29ers start to really pick up steam in the market.

1:52.4

Yeah, you know, like we see with a lot of new wheel sizes, the tires are kind of the last piece to fall into place.

1:58.5

You know, after all, you could weld up a frame and a rigid fork for any wheel size.

2:03.1

You can imagine, but if you don't have tires for it, you're not going to be able to ride it.

2:07.1

So WTV was the first company to mass produce a 29er tire, and that was the Nanoraptor in 1999.

2:15.1

Bike Mag actually just recently did a little brief history write-up of that tire if you want

2:20.3

to check it out on their site. So what about you guys? What was the first 29er that you got?
