In 1793, Filippert Asper, a dormant at Valdegris hospital in Paris,

wandered into one of the hospital's courtyards underground tunnels. Some accounts claim that

Aspert was searching for a wine cellar, while others suggest he was trying to enter the basement

of a nearby brewery. Whatever the case, Fillebert found himself completely alone in the dark

and vast tunnels that night. And these tunnels weren't just any tunnels. They were a stretch of the Paris

catacombs, a complex and vast network of ossuaries, passageways, and chambers containing the bones and

remains of millions and millions of people.

And so, Filippe and his wanderings entered into this labyrinth of bones, carrying a single

candle to light his way. And when that candle gave its last light, he became lost, enveloped in

darkness. Unable to find his way back out, Fillebert died in the catacombs. His body was

eventually recovered in 1804, 11 years after his disappearance, and tragically, so close to an

escape, just a few steps away from a staircase. Authorities and those who knew him were able to

identify the former dormant by the buttons on his jacket and a key ring.
