1978, Father Ernst Alt, 40, and Father Arnold Renz, 67 years old, stood trial for negligent

homicide. The spectators in the courtroom listened to tapes of guttural screams and obscenities

amidst chance of prayer. The screams were made by

Annalise Michelle, who was 23 years old when the two priests in the defendant's box had

conducted an exorcism on her, two years prior, ultimately resulting in her death.

This trial was the first of its kind in German history and garnered the rapt attention of the public.

Now, despite a long history with epilepsy and mental illness, Annalise's parents and the priests

were convinced that the only explanation for her incurable and heightened vexation was demonic possession.

She endured months and months of grueling rights and exorcism

in extreme starvation and dehydration. By the time of her death, she was absolutely emaciated,
