0:00.0 | Welcome to the Autism, ADHD podcast. I am so happy that you join me today. I want to take a moment and ask for your help. Please take just a second and give the podcast a five-star review. |
0:19.5 | This will help me continue the podcast and keep bringing you |
0:23.3 | helpful information. Thanks so much again for taking the time to give that five-star review. Now, |
0:29.9 | let's get started. Welcome everyone to the Autism-A-D podcast.. Today I'm talking about the overlap between autism and ADHD, because they do have some things in common. I'm going to talk about those things that they have in common and also the reasons behind them. So first, let's take a look at attention and focus. |
0:57.8 | Children with ADHD often struggle to focus and maintain that attention, |
1:03.7 | especially on tasks that are not very interesting to them and not very stimulating. |
1:10.5 | And that's why a child may have a hard time |
1:13.4 | focusing in a boring class and they could sit forever in front of a stimulating video game, |
1:24.1 | right? Very different situations. So kids with ADHD can get easily distracted by things that |
1:30.6 | happen around them in their environment, but even more so, they can get distracted by their |
1:36.5 | own thoughts. They may be thinking of something that you told them and then bam, it's gone |
1:42.0 | because they're thinking about something else and then that |
1:44.8 | might be gone again in a moment because then they're going to think about something that may be |
1:49.9 | related or not. And autistic children, attention can be kind of tough to you. And it's often because |
1:57.5 | they are super focused on something specific, almost to the point of tunnel vision, |
2:03.1 | which may be different than what we're asking them to focus on. |
2:08.5 | Again, it may be due to this hyper focus on this specific interest or an attention can be because they're overwhelmed by some sensory details |
2:20.8 | in their environment, which is making it hard for them to pay attention. |
2:24.6 | So for example, if an autistic child is sitting in class and we expect them to be listening |
2:31.8 | and doing their work, but they're having a hard time |
2:35.2 | paying attention because their clothing is so uncomfortable or the hum of the lights |
2:41.1 | is really distracting for them. |
