Summary
This Wednesday episode revels in the return of golf’s oldest major championship and a style of golf that we see far less than we should. Brendan begins with a point of the recent Open hitting a sweet spot of authenticity for the discerning golf audience on the internet and elsewhere that has boosted the major over the past decade or so. Then they get to Royal St. George’s, with Andy providing some intel on the course’s history and layout and greens and the “quirk” that may drive some players nuts this week. They’re almost bursting with excitement over the venue and what it might present for the world’s best, citing Brooks quotes about “shots to nothing.” The usual major championship Wednesday practice of highlighting their favorite tee times is done, with some curious placement of Brooksy, Jimmy, and others. Then they move to the quotable portion of the preview, scanning the transcripts. Bryson’s insistence on both his “greatness and humbleness” as well as his extremely defensive answer about never shouting “fore” are discussed, among other answers. The final segment includes picks to win as well as a review of some of the top players who might need it most or could change their trajectory most with a win.

| 0:00.0 | Now the shotgun's starting golf is full of mathematics, there's a lot of set up work that we have to do in order to make a tournament work, so I'm going to demonstrate to you just exactly how we do a shotgun start here. |
| 0:14.0 | And here we go. |
| 0:17.0 | All right, all right, all right. |
| 0:21.0 | Get to men! |
| 0:24.0 | Start your escape! |
| 0:29.0 | Greetings and welcome to a Wednesday edition of the shotgun start. It is July 14th. Andy, how are we doing? |
| 0:48.0 | Brendan, I'm doing well. I guess it's a little bittersweet. |
| 0:54.0 | I don't know if I'm going to be able to deal with this open championship. I'm going to be missing my buddy, my brother, from another mother, Zach Johnson. |
| 1:05.0 | I don't know how I'm going to deal with without the two-time major winner there. It's a bummer. Obviously, it sucks you can't come over. |
| 1:13.0 | But I don't know if I'm going to be able to cope with him not playing this year's open. |
| 1:19.0 | This is an inauspicious start. I said, how are you doing? And I got 30 seconds of black screen in silence. |
| 1:26.0 | I heard no Brendan. The Wi-Fi is already on the threads. It must be major championship week. I just stand in there silent as you went out. |
| 1:34.0 | And I came back to you talking about Zach Johnson. So we're primed and ready for our major championship. |
| 1:39.0 | I'm better sweet. If you missed it, I'm better. It's better sweet. I got you. |
| 1:46.0 | Zach, you know, we don't need to get into it. Who knows what he's doing? He's out there harvesting corn on a John Deere tractor this week instead of being able to play the open championship. |
| 1:57.0 | It's major week. It's after a year away. It's not just another major. You know, look, we've had a lot of the super season. |
| 2:07.0 | A lot of intrigue that the pandemic has created a lot of, you know, unique circumstances not by choice often. |
| 2:14.0 | You got a November masters of fall US open, you know, with no fans. But we didn't get it open. We have two years now off from the open. |
| 2:24.0 | So it's kind of, I think an extra bit of anticipation for this one. I know I'm extremely excited. I've started to look at more and more about Royal St. George's. |
| 2:33.0 | You're more and more people talk about it. I'm sure we'll get into it in this part. I cannot wait. I think. |
| 2:40.0 | I don't know. You could pop me if I'm wrong here. But I would say like Twitter, Twitter more or less makes a lot of things worse. Many things worse. |
| 2:52.0 | I do think it has this is sort of so internet error. Not just Twitter has sort of enhanced the open championship in a way that maybe it didn't enjoy in the 90s or 80s or early 2000s. |
