She was five years old the first time she understood that a house could notice you.

At the time, she didn't have the language for it.

She only knew that some nights

felt different from others, heavier in a way she couldn't explain. The house on Broadview was old,

but not imposing, the kind of place that smelled faintly of dust and furniture polish. It had come

into the family after her great-grandmother passed away,

and her father inherited it without ceremony. To everyone else, it was simply a house with history.

To her, it was something that paid attention. She shared a bedroom with her older sister

sleeping on the bottom bunk. That night she lay awake, staring into the darkness, while her sister slept above her, breathing deeply, loudly enough to be unmistakable.

The room was quiet in the way only nighttime bedrooms are, no television, no voices, just the faint hum of the house, settling around them. That was when the

mist appeared. At first it was barely noticeable a pale haze forming near the foot of the bed.

She thought it might be light shifting from outside or dust caught in the air. Then it grew thicker.

It gathered itself, moving with intention,

slowly shaping into something unmistakably human. She watched it without fear. The figure didn't rush or loom. It moved calmly, drifting across the room as if it had taken that path many

times before.

When it reached the doorway, it dissolved, fading into nothing without sound or disturbance.

She lay there afterward, wide awake, her heart steady.

She wasn't frightened. She was amazed.
