By the time Julia turned into the driveway that evening, she had been visiting the house for nearly three weeks.

The patient's illness had progressed slowly at first, and during the early visits,

the woman had still been able to talk while Julia checked medications and adjusted pillows.

They had spent time chatting about ordinary things during those appointments. The woman liked to talk about the garden she used to keep in the
