Good morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the new corner office, the podcast where we share

strategies for thriving in the new world of work, where location and hours are more flexible than in

the past. Today's tip is to call a colleague to say goodbye. We all need a way to tell ourselves

that the workday is done. In the absence of a commute, calling a colleague to recap the day and

say goodbye is a great substitute. As millions of people have been working from home for the first

time in the wake of COVID-19, one of the toughest adjustments has been figuring out how to, well,

relax. When you can see your workspace from the rest of the house, it's easy to feel guilty

about not working all night long. And so, plenty of people do have work and have not work

into the wee hours. Commutes provide a natural transition between work and home.

Without a commute, you need some sort of other shutdown ritual. We've discussed different options

on this podcast before, but today I want to suggest one that you might not be doing.

Calling a colleague to say goodbye. In the office before you left, you probably circled

around saying your goodbyes to your immediate team. And this offered a nice way to catch up on

what was going on, to check in on anything still outstanding, and to set the norm of it being

okay to leave. You can recreate some aspects of this from your home office. You probably won't

call everyone, though, perhaps you could. Here's my rule. Any office that has a morning check-in
