Summary

In Texas, Friday night lights herald the local high school football games and that's when life really begins in small town Texas. In West Texas, there are other lights- much more mysterious lights, which have been spotted in the mountains outside of Marfa, Texas, for over 100 years. These are called The Marfa Lights, and they are the subject of lots of stories and urban legends. This is the story of the Marfa Lights.

Hi, everyone. It's time for another story from

0:25.0

2001 Heroes, Legends, Histories, and Mysteries podcast. This is your host, John

0:29.8

Hagdorn, and I have a legend and a mystery for you today. Tonight's story, the

0:34.9

other Friday Night Lights takes place in Texas, and involves a story about a very

0:39.6

unusual Texas phenomenon called the Marful Lights, M-A-R-F-A, which were first

0:46.3

witnessed by a rancher back in 1883, and they still continue today. The story of

0:51.8

the Marful Lights is full of urban legend and accounts, and makes great subject

0:55.8

matter for some storytelling here. Meanwhile, my title, The Other Friday Night

1:00.8

Lights, was inspired by the title of H.G. Bissinger's book, Friday Night Lights,

1:05.3

A Town, A Team, and A Dream. A monster bestseller that inspired an Academy of

1:11.2

World-winning movie, followed by a very popular television series. The story

1:16.2

centers around the economically depressed town of Odessa, Texas, and their

1:20.0

heroic high school football team, The Panthers, and what a story it is. If you

1:25.2

drive south west from Odessa, which is about a two-hour and forty-five minute

1:29.0

drive, you'll reach Marfa, a small desert town in West Texas, not far from the

1:33.8

Mexican border. Population around 2000, and it's known best for what is commonly

1:38.9

called the Marful Lights phenomenon, which you can watch most nights from a viewing

1:43.7

platform that was built nine miles east of town, on the south side of

1:47.3

around 90 near an abandoned air base. Watching from here, you're looking

1:52.1

across the Mitchell flats to the Chinatown Mountains about about fifty miles

1:55.9

distant, and it's from here that thousands of curious watchers are able to
