Living in a small town, as appealing as it is,

has some drawbacks. First of all, it takes too long to get to target. And second, it can give

you a false sense of security. The feeling of bad things only happen to other people.

Unfortunately, that isn't true. Yeah, it's more

rare, but it can and does happen.

18-year-old Amanda, or Mandy, as her friends and family called her, home for Thanksgiving break from her first

year at Central Washington University, went for a late afternoon run with music playing in her ears

and her dog, Kyra, matching her pace. A route she took often, down the street she lived on,

Strand Road, to Nooksack River, and back home

again. On this day, she made it to the river and was seen jogging on the way back, but she never

arrived. Two hours later, Kyra, the German Shepherd, came home, but still no Mandy.

It was so out of the ordinary for her that people began searching immediately.

The police were called into search as well.

A tight-knit small town in the upper most west part of Washington states, devastated by the disappearance of Mandy. Why shouldn't they be? It's one of those towns you

hear about where you don't even bother locking your door. You can just leave your keys in your car.

And living in a place like that sounds pretty fantastic and can give you a false sense of

security allowing you to let your guard down, maybe a little bit too much. Every television station,

a newspaper in the state, covered the story, hoping to find Mandy Stavik. The Stavik's prayed
