This week we aren't talking about him, but about his victims Barbara and her son Patrick.

In different ways, Barbara and Patrick both lost their lives to the same man.

Today I'll talk with Patrick about what he remembers of his mother and the chaos surrounding her death.

He'll talk about how it shaped the way he reacted as a teen and how he is turned into a helper as an adult.

I would like to start by thanking Patrick, not only for reaching out and taking the time to be interviewed about such an emotionally heavy subject,

but for trusting me to tell his mother's story.

It is truly an honor and it's really the purpose of why we do the show. So thank you Patrick.

Something I've learned in our five years of doing all of this is that truth is very finicky if it even exists. You'll hear Patrick tell parts of his mother's story today

that conflict with what I shared last week. First of all, it is his story. So if that information

is what he was told or what he remembers from all that time

ago, that's fine. Secondly, we have seen more than enough examples of incompetency when it

comes to interviews and reports that as possible things

got slightly jumbled. I just want to clear that up. I don't want someone to hear

Patrick talking about the firefighters finding his mother's car and get upset that the

report said it was Dean. Maybe they did see it as they

left or maybe they told Patrick this information later. We just don't know. So I'm just asking

for everyone to have some patience, give some grace, and have understanding.

What matters aren't the exact details.

What matters is Barbara and Patrick and their story.

I started by asking Patrick about his childhood and what he knew of his mother's life, not just once she was his mother, but her life before children, before she was the target of a violent crime. Hi, Patrick.
