It was June 6th, 1980, in the normally quiet suburb of Libertyville, Illinois.

Located in the heart of Lake County, it was one of the most affluent communities surrounding Chicago.

The residents of Libertyville weren't accustomed to violent crime.

Those kinds of things don't happen here, they'd often say, until they do. And when they do, it always seems like evil touches the people

you'd least expect bad things to happen to, like Bruce Rouse and his wife Darlene.

Bruce was a self-made millionaire.

Born in 1936, his family ran a successful service station in car wash in Mundeline, Illinois, another Chicago bedroom

community to the north. Raised with a strong work ethic, he worked various jobs

before opening four service stations of his own.

His fortune was built with those gas stations,

real estate investments,

partnership in a cable TV company,

and by installing aftermarket air conditioners
