So Romans chapter 2, this passage, this is probably the most abused chapter in the entire book of Romans, in my opinion.

So I'm sadly going to be correcting abuses as we go through this passage, but in so doing, hopefully I'll restore how great it is.

I mean, there's some really neat stuff in Romans chapter two, and I'm not exaggerating it is it is necessary

Valuable stuff philosophically, doctrinally, theologically and just for self-awareness all these good things so here we are Romans

two verse one here's our misused verse the first one

therefore you are inexcusable oh man

whoever you are who judge for in whatever you are who judge for whatever you judge another you

condemn yourself for you who judge practice the same things.

Let me start by telling you what this is not saying. This passage is not saying,

don't judge others.

That is not what it's saying.

That's obviously not a blanket permission to go and be as judgmental as possible, but that's just not what this

passage is teaching.

It's not saying, don't make judgments about the rightness or

wrongness of other people's behavior. That's not what it's saying, yet I have had

this very passage quoted to me as though it said that.

Let's read it again, right?

Therefore you are inexcusable, oh man, whoever you are, who judge.

For in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself,

for you who judge practice the same things.

What it's doing is it's analyzing those who make judgments.

It's saying they're inexcusable. It's not saying don't judge.
