Berg takes you on the journey for the truth about getting healthy and losing healthy weight.

0:13.2

So, what is the most common cause of hair loss?

0:26.1

Well, if you guessed androgenic alopecia, you are correct. Now, what is androgenic alopecia?

0:32.4

Well, it's pattern hair loss. Now, in men, it's the receding hairline and also loss of hair on the

0:38.5

top of your head. Now, in women, it's a little bit different. It's a kind of a diffuse thinning of the

0:44.2

hair all over. Now, this is actually very, very common. It affects 50 to 80 percent of men,

0:51.8

and 25 to 50 percent of females at some point in their lives. Now, the way hair loss medication

0:59.6

works, there's a couple different mechanisms. One popular drug works by increasing oxygen,

1:04.5

nutrients, and nitric oxide to the scalp, which increases circulation. But most hair loss

1:11.8

medications work by inhibiting a certain enzyme. And that enzyme is called five alpha reductase.

1:19.1

Now, what does this enzyme do? Well, it allows testosterone to be converted to a much more

1:24.7

powerful form of testosterone called DHT. If you have too much DHT in your body,

1:31.3

what happens is you get a thickened dermis around the hair follicles. So, it's going to suffocate

1:35.9

the hair follicle. You get increased fibrosis, that's kind of like a scarring, which wraps around

1:42.0

the hair. And then you also get calcification around the hair follicles. So, that's what DHT

1:48.8

does to your hair. So, DHT is a type of antigen. What's ironic about antigen, in general,

1:56.5

is they normally increase body hair, but then not on the top of your scalp. They actually,

2:02.2

you get a loss of hair on the top of your scalp, which is pretty odd. Now, let me just explain

2:06.7

more about this enzyme. Five alpha reductase. Now, when someone experiences castration,

2:13.6

there's a 95% decrease in antigens. And what happens at the same time is they stop losing their

2:20.6

hair. They stop experiencing energetic alopecia. Another point I want to bring up is people who are
