On September 17, 1977, a young man named Kirk Anderson made a bizarre and truly terrifying

claim to police in Surrey, England.

He claimed that three days earlier, he was abducted from the steps of a meeting house of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

by a man who claimed he was investigating Mormonism and who was carrying a fake gun in one hand and chloroform in the other.

Kirk was then taken to a cottage in Devon, where for three days he was held against his will by a woman named Joyce Vernon McKinney.

A woman who made attempts to seduce him, sexually assaulted him repeatedly while he was tied to a bed and raped him.

He claimed that she came into the room where he was manacled to the bed

wearing negligee and tore at his clothing until he was nude, that he laid there powerless

to her advances for three days, and that she performed non-consensual oral sex on him,

and forcibly had intercourse with him while saying he could not leave

until she was pregnant. Kirk said that she only let her guard down when he finally agreed to marry her

and seizing the opportunity, he made his escape. The case when the news spread became known as the

manacled Mormon case or the Mormon Sex in Chains case.
