Summary

Cult Babes! We’re kicking off week 2 of Cult-vember with a wild story, no really there is so much going on that we have to pick up next week with the rest of the story. Today we’re discussing some culty cult cults who were live laugh loving polygamy a little too much. When a small town doctor in Murray, Utah was moidahed in their office, it led to the discovery of a cult rivalry between false prophets.  Write me: [email protected] Follow along online: instagram.com/cultliterpodcast Check out my new show OBITCHUARY wherever you’re listening now!  Sponsor:  Thrive Causemetics: ThriveCausemetics.com/cultliter for 15% off your first order!  Hello Fresh: America’s #1 meal kit! Hello and welcome back to Cult Leader. I'm your Cult Leader Spencer Henry and if you're new here, Cult Leader is a podcast about cults and moida and today's stories got a whole lot of both.

0:46.0

We are continuing Cult Fember with one of our wildest, longest running stories to date. We don't even have time to catch up this week because we have too much to talk about.

The most complex part of working on this episode was trying to figure out which stories to tell when, like how to lay it all out, make it all make sense.

1:12.0

But there's just so much to go over, so much information, and it is a wild ride.

1:17.0

You know when you sit down and you're watching a movie, maybe you have a question about one of the actors or you're like, was this person in this or maybe the movie you're watching is based on a true story.

1:28.0

So you want to look up the real details, see how much truth there is behind it, and then in an hour later you'll find yourself just in a completely different part of the internet because you can't stop consuming the details.

1:39.0

Or maybe you're capable of sitting and enjoying something. Hey, that's the case sometimes, but other times you get lost just exploring all of the different events or aftermath of a story.

1:50.0

That's what happened to me with today's episode. We know by now that stories are not always accurately portrayed by the media, whether they're being sensationalized, leaving out key details or simply making things up or doing weird editing tricks, it all has to be taken with a grain of salt.

2:07.0

Whenever I start looking into a cult or subject for an episode, I always first start by watching something to do with the case, whether it's a documentary or a 2020 special date line or some cheesy reenactment that I found, just something.

2:23.0

I'm like, okay, give me the basic story before I actually start looking into it. I want to know what's going on here. I want to go through and find what I want to talk about.

2:32.0

Well, that's what happened to me with today's episode. I've actually been told a few different times to look into today's story.

2:38.0

And as soon as I started looking into it, I happened upon an episode of Oxygen's Deadly Colts. And it's why I mentioned the whole Googling while you watch thing, which by the way, there needs to be a name for that phenomenon.

2:50.0

But in the 30-ish minute episode, they tell a story of how a murder investigation led to the discovery of a whole bunch of other stuff. But it's very like, well, understandably, in a 30-minute television episode, you can only cover so much that's something I know from experience.

3:05.0

But at the end of it, they briefly run through some other stuff that took me on a whole nother journey. And so we're going to talk about that today.

3:13.0

I mean, I know, obviously, on cult leader, I consider myself to be more of a storyteller versus obviously some investigative news piece.

3:22.0

But that's because I know there's a lot of people like me who want to know what happened. Like, sit down, tell me a story. I don't need all the theatrics. Just tell me a story.

3:31.0

Back to this episode. So it was season two, episode six, I have Deadly Colts. I'm about 15 minutes, maybe 20 into it. And I start looking into the backstory.

3:40.0

And what happened after the origin and it led me down so many different paths. And I could not get enough.

3:47.0

I was just yearning to know more about this story. When I was trying to format this episode, I kept getting lost on where to start.

3:54.0

So I figured I'll just take you all through it the same way that I went through it by first focusing on this murder that happened that led to the discovery of a whole bunch of other cult shit.
