Yesterday we talked about playing more offense in your work versus playing defense all day.

Going through the day on your toes versus always being on your heels,

attacking your goals versus just playing goalkeeper all day, fending off all the shots coming at you

to your inbox, to text messages, to social notifications, and the got a minute lineup at your door.

Today, let's talk about how to play on your toes in the rest of

the areas of your life. How about in your marriage or a relationship with a significant other?

Instead of waiting for the expected special occasions, birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine's Day,

and the like, which would be playing defense on your heels, What about playing offense? How about organizing and

planning something super special as a surprise out of the blue? How about coming home with a big

beautiful bouquet of flowers on a regular Tuesday night? How about slipping an unexpected wrapped

gift into his or her briefcase or left next to his or her morning coffee cup in the morning.

How about buying one of those expensive hallmark cards and writing a love note in it when it is

not a holiday? How about cooking up, or in my case hiring a chef to cook up, a surprise

candlelit dinner for just the two of you? You see, that's playing offense. That's attacking

the goal. If you only play defense, you don't score any points. To score, and in this case,

I do mean that figuratively and literally, you got to play offense. How about in your parenting,

let's say? When your kid does something great, a drawing that they're proud of, a dive in the pool that

they've been working on, they bring home a good report card, they win the game, what have you.

When you give them kudos and praise, then that is still playing defense.

You are reacting to a shot they fired.
