harrowing tales of the catastrophically lost. I'm Jack Luna. This is Aaron Abel. In June of 1722,

a man named Philip Ashton set sail out of Marblehead, Massachusetts, aboard his 50-foot schooner,

Milton, headed northeast for the southern tip of Nova Scotia, an island off the east coast of Canada,

to fish for the ever-abundant cod in the area. Despite his young age, just 19, he is captain of the

five-man crew and has been hand-lining cod out of the Atlantic for years.

The fishermen make good time on the water, and after a couple of days of sailing,

they reached their intended fishing location and begin baiting their hooks and dropping their weighted lines,

pulling fish out of the Atlantic Ocean one at a time.

As the fish pile up, a few of the men begin cleaning

and packing them away into barrels of salt below deck. By Friday afternoon, after days of

grueling work out on the open ocean, Philip and his cruise sailed toward Port Roseway, a natural

harbor tucked into the southwestern coast of Nova Scotia. Due to the Sabbath Day prohibitions in Puritan New England, it is illegal to work

after sundown on Saturday, so the men head to the harbor early for some much-needed time off.

Upon their arrival, they find several other schooners already moored in the well-known harbor.

Philip Ashton nestles his schooner in amongst them, and soon his crew are relaxing

and preparing for dinner, settling in for their weekend of rest.
