Summary

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE!

In 1893, construction began on Robert and Clara Bell’s Romanesque-style mansion in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Robert was a state senator, investor, and a prominent lawyer. Clara loved the arts and co-founded the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.

The Bells sold the home to William K. Nobel, whose family lived there for 22 years – then the house was sold and became a funeral home. It served the Fort Wayne area as the Klaehn Funeral Home for 93 years. And in that span of time, it’s believed that between 300 and 500 thousand bodies went through its doors. And many of them still haunt the halls to this day. They’re in good company. It’s believed that Robert and Clara also are still in the home.

Today on the Grave Talks, The Many Ghosts of The Bell Mansion with event coordinator, Lindsay Crouch. This is Part Two of our conversation.

After they did the addition in 1935, they had the larger embalming room across the hall, which

did the remainder of the embalming

0:14.2

throughout the years. But there was an estimated of 300 to 600,000 bodies that had been in and out of that place. So it's

0:22.3

kind of high traffic facility for one time. So yeah, when you go in that embalming room and you really sit and think about that, all of the people that had been in and out of that room.

It is a little unsettling and it's just kind of leaves you

0:38.2

with a weird feeling.

0:39.2

Nothing, you know, negative, but it just kind of, you tackle your own mortality when you think

0:44.5

about things like that 300 to 600,000 but you know you do consider it was close to 100 years that it was in operation.

0:57.8

That's that just kind of blew me away because yeah, it's it's kind of a kind of it's a little bit of an overload you know and then

1:05.9

there was another event in 1982 Fort Wayne suffered a really horrible flood and

1:12.4

there was a lot of damage in the downtown area and a lot of death unfortunately and there were so many bodies

1:25.0

in through a basement window and just stacking them wherever they could put them

1:30.0

because they were so backed up.

1:33.0

And so that kind of leaves a little bit of a residual footprint too to think about when you're down in the basement.

1:39.0

It kind of makes me thinking, you know, funeral homes are one of those places that you know I've heard it my sister had a

1:46.2

funeral home an old building built in 1800s and it was built as a funeral home

1:51.8

and and I'm like why would a funeral home be haunted because the bodies

1:57.0

are coming in for preparation and that isn't where you'd want to haunt, but then it made me kind of think, does it attract it,

2:07.0

the spirits, you know, does it make it more of a transitory place where they're not necessarily there all the time.

2:16.6

It kind of opens up to like the traveler spirits.

2:20.4

Is a kind of I don't know if I'm sure there's a better way to describe that but you know what I'm saying
