Conscience, a noun, a person's moral sense of right and wrong, viewed as acting as a guide to one's behaviour.

So imagine this. Imagine you've killed someone. And it looks like you got away with it.

Would you be able to live your life? Would you carry on living normally as you were before

without the thought of what you had done plaguing you every day?

Would your conscience kick in?

And when it did or if it did, what would you do?

In today's case, we're going to hear what happens when someone's conscience activates.

And it never leaves them after committing the worst crime possible.

I'm Naomi Channel and this is real. You know, In 2008, 28-year-old Claire Holland was working in a cafe in Bristol in the west of England.

She was a mother of three children, a daughter and two sons, and she was single.

A man called Darren Osment got a job working in the same cafe as Claire, he was a chef,

and soon after they met, they started a romantic relationship. In 2010, Claire fell pregnant and she gave birth to their child, a little baby boy.

This should have been an exciting new chapter for the couple, but a month after Claire gave birth,

Darren's behaviour towards her started to change, and their relationship

became toxic and violent. Both Darren and Claire had issues with alcohol, and it wasn't long

before they split up. When their son was just a month old, he was taken into care after Darren became violent and threw Claire down a flight of stairs.

The police were called and social services intervened.

Claire told her social workers that she was frightened of her partner and that he'd tried to strangle her in the past.
