After midnight.

It wasn't unusual for her to be out that late.

She worked as a paramedic, and most of her shifts didn't end when they were supposed to.

Calls came in when they came in, and you stayed until everything was handled. Some nights wrapped up

clean. Others stretched longer than you planned, especially when you were already tired.

That night had run a little late, nothing dramatic, just enough that by the time she was heading

home,

most of the town had already settled in. The roads weren't completely empty, but close to it.

A car every now and then, maybe someone heading home from a late shift or passing through,

but long stretches where it was just her and the road. She was about 10 minutes from home when

the car started acting up. At first, it was easy

to ignore. A small hesitation when she pressed the gas like the engine lagged for a second before

catching up. She eased off slightly, listening for anything that sounded wrong, but it smoothed out

almost immediately. No warning lights, no obvious problem. She kept driving.

A minute later it happened again. This time it lasted just long enough to get her attention.

The engine dropped, caught, then pushed forward like nothing had happened.

She glanced down at the dash, more out of habit than concerned, but everything looked normal.

Still, she started scanning ahead for somewhere to pull over.

The road she was on ran just outside town close enough that you could be home in minutes,

but far enough that there weren't businesses or houses lined up along it.
