Normally I like to have a cup of coffee and have a Monday morning Bible devotional with you.

But today, I was just thinking about the fact that we celebrated St. Patrick's Day.

Actually, I didn't celebrate it.

To be honest with you, I was so busy that I just blew right past it.

And what do you think about when you think of St. Patrick's Day?

Do you think of shamrocks and the color green, leprechauns, gold at the end of a rainbow?

Do you think of beer? Do you think of St. Patty's Day celebrating the guy that chased all the

snakes out of Ireland? Well, the true story of St. Patrick is worth retelling because he was a legend. This is one of history's

heroes and a personal inspiration to me. So in the 300s, AD, pagan druid pirates from Ireland raided a village of Celtic Christians in Scotland.

Christianity had spread from the Mediterranean area up into England and Scotland and Ireland.

And these druids captured a 16-year-old boy named Patrick. And Patrick became a slave to them.

And he tended sheep for a cruel druid chieftain in the frozen fields of Northern Ireland.

And he did this for six years. We have the historical documents

that tell us this. And the boy, who was practically an atheist when he was captured,

he cried out to God, they said, over a hundred times in his despair. He would cry out in the

night, and he grew close to God in his suffering.

Patrick, as he grew up, became repulsed and disgusted by the witchcraft and the human sacrifice

of the druid priests. They would have skulls that were impaled on these posts and all sorts of other horrible pagan

practices. Eventually, God provided an escape for young Patrick, and he goes back to England.
