On August 31st, 1894, a woman was killed inside of her home. And in the aftermath of

her assailant's execution, many added her name to a long list of victims belonging to one of the

most notorious serial killers of all time. So if you like your coffee hot but your bones chilled,

sit back and start your day with a morning cup of murder. In August of 1894, Juliana Hoffman, a 56-year-old widow, and her 16-year-old

son, Michael, in desperate need for extra funds, opened up their home to a lodger named

Carl Faganbaum. Runting one of the rooms

inside of Juliana's home just above a shop on East 6th Street in New York, Carl told the mother-son

duo that he had just recently lost his job as a gardener and that, though he had no money at the

moment, he promised he had a job lined up at a florist

and would pay them all the rent he owed when he got paid on the 1st of September.

With that date near days away, and taking him for his word, Juliana agreed, and Michael moved

into the room with his mother so Carl could take his old room.

Only a few days after answering that ad, Carl Faganbaum, at around 10 p.m. on August 31, 1894,

crept into Juliana's room, silently skirted around Michael asleep on the couch at the foot of the

bed, reared his hand back, and began stabbing his landlady to death.

Apparently oblivious to the teenage boy sleeping just feet away, Michael woke to the sound of his
