Once upon a time, on a dark, cold night, Shelby and her siblings were walking home from

the park.

The moon lights landed through the trees, and the street lamps made little golden circles

on the path.

Her siblings, two sisters and a brother, ran ahead laughing.

Shelby though didn't feel like running.

She didn't feel like laughing.

Shelby was always getting left behind.

She walked with a limp because one of her legs was slightly shorter than the other.

She'd been born like that.

Sometimes it just happens, her mother had said.

It wasn't too noticeable, Shelby thought, except when she tried to keep up with her siblings

and other kids.

Even with the lift and her shoe, which made her legs closer in height, Shelby couldn't

match their speed.

Mostly, Shelby didn't mind.

She usually passed the time by making up stories in her head.
