Summary

In this episode, Nancy Wilson walks through 1 Timothy 6:9–11 and warns that the love of money can ensnare rich and poor alike, sour marriages and friendships, and pierce people through with many sorrows. She urges listeners to flee the desire to be rich, learn contentment with little or much, and instead pursue the lasting things: righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.

I thought today I go through a short passage in 1 Timothy 6.9 through 11 that addresses

0:18.1

the danger of being too fond of money. That's putting it lightly. Here's the quotation,

0:25.6

but those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful lus

0:33.6

which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of

0:40.5

evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierce themselves through

with many sorrows. But you, O man of God, flee these things, and pursue righteousness,

0:53.4

godliness, faith, love, patience,

0:56.9

gentleness. Paul is certainly not mincing words here. He's outlining very graphically the problem

1:04.0

and terrible outcomes for those who are chasing money. Money is always a moving target,

1:10.1

coming and going. Instead of money, he wants us to

1:13.5

chase something far more valuable, things that are not moving targets, righteousness, godliness,

1:20.7

1:29.9

He wants to turn us away from one thing and turn to something in a completely different direction. And these things we are to pursue,

1:36.5

unlike money, are lasting fruits that we will be taking with us to heaven. The temptation to love money

1:42.9

is strong. And once we are in its grip, we cannot

1:46.2

easily turn aside. We must flee, run away. This temptation is not just for those wanting to be rich,

1:53.5

but for those who are already rich. Rich people can think they never have enough. Those with modest

incomes want more. At all places on the

2:03.3

graph from top to bottom, there is a temptation to love money, custom made to fit us perfectly,
