The covenants are what we've been talking about. This American covenant is something that our ancestors understood that there was no way that they

were going to start a brand new nation that was of the people, for the people, by the people,

that would not have a king. It wouldn't be an all-powerful government that controlled the nation.

It would be self-governing individuals that would gather together in communities and form separate states

and that they would unify for the important stuff, but they understood that if they didn't want big,

powerful, top-down government, they had to self-govern from the heart and do the right thing without being told.

And doing the right thing from the heart in order to honor God and bless their neighbor was absolutely essential.

It was the building block of our country.

And God's whole world works off this concept of covenants.

A covenant is a sacred promise.

But this covenant concept doesn't only apply to the covenant that God made with Abraham or to start a new nation or to have this covenant that would lay out the laws of God for Israel with Moses.

It doesn't just apply to the new covenant that Jesus laid out.

It also applies to the Declaration of Independence.

It applies to the Mayflower Compact. These are sacred promises that are between two different

parties. Sometimes it's God and a person. Sometimes it's between two people or a group of people

I covenant with my wife.
