Summary

Kaysha is in her early 20s: low on resources, but big on dreams. Sometimes, those dreams feel tantalizingly close to reality; other times, she's pulled back into a life she badly wants to leave behind. We follow Kaysha for a year and a half as she tries to break out of the loop.

This is the fifth episode of “The Loop,” Ear Hustle’s six-part series about kids in New York City who are caught up, one way or another, in the criminal justice system.

Ear Hustle would like to thank: Joanne Smith-Darden, Associate Professor, School of Social Work, Ruth T. Koehler Endowed Professor in Children's Services, Michigan State University and Co-Director, SPARK Lab; Heather McCauley, Associate Professor, School of Social Work, Michigan State University and Co-Director, SPARK Lab; and Adam Brown, Associate Professor, Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, City University of New York, for their tremendous support of this project.

Big thanks, too, to the Drama Club team — including Josie Whittlesey, Cesar Rosado, Tiffany “Tiny” Cruz, Abby Pierce, Sophie Jones, and Ashley Adams. You can find out more about their work here.

And thanks to Nancy Ginsberg, Aylese Kanze, and Commissioner Danhauser at New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services for saying “yes” to this project.

As always, thanks to Warden Andes and Lt. Berry at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center; Acting Warden Parker, Associate Warden Lewis, and Lt. Newborg at the California Institution for Women; and Warden De La Cruz and Lt. Williams at the Central California Women’s Facility for their support of our work.

Like this comment from a listener name too, 99% Invisible brought me to

0:23.2

Radiotopia a decade ago, but I stayed for Song Exploder, Normal Gossip, Articles of Interest,

0:29.4

Ear Hustle, and The Heart. Thank you for supporting so many incredible creators. Your shows have

0:34.8

genuinely changed my life, expanded my knowledge and understanding of the world, and made me a better person.

0:41.4

Thank you, too. That's so nice.

Or this one from Jared.

What got me to donate was the idea of donated to many of my favorite podcasts and that I might be contributing to a show that doesn't even exist yet that might become

0:55.7

one of my favorites. That's what's up. That's a cool way to think. Indeed. Donating to Radiotopia

1:02.1

not only supports Ear Hustle, like Jared says, it also is a way to support what could be. It's a

1:08.9

vote of confidence in our business model and a celebration of this

1:12.5

collective of independent creators. Right now, while we're recording this, we are at just

1:17.9

431 donors, which is 29% of our goal of 1,500 donors before December 31st. If Ear Hustle has meant

1:26.3

something to you this year, please make your tax deductible

1:30.6

donation today at Radiotopia.fm slash donate. Your donation gets distributed among all the

1:38.4

creators in the Radiotopia Network, and every gift will help us get closer to our goal. That's

Radiotopia.fm slash donate.
