He looked very nervous, very, very nervous.

And I said to him, so, Mr. Hewerman,

I understand that you are confessing to me on these murders.

Can you please tell me how many of these women did you kill?

He said eight.

Eight? Was there any hesitation when he said eight? No, he just told me the answer.

He said I wasn't home during all of them. Were any of them killed in the house?

He said yes, they were killed in his room downstairs, all except them. Were any of them killed in the house? He said, yes, they were killed in his room downstairs.

All except one.

in which he admitted to her that he is a serial killer.

Secrets. This is Australian True Crime International with Michelle Lorry. In May 2010, 24-year-old

Shannon Gilbert disappeared after making a frantic 911 call from Oak Beach on Long Island, telling

police someone was trying to kill her.

The search for Shannon led investigators to a remote stretch of coastline near Gilgo Beach,

where they instead uncovered the remains of multiple missing women,

beginning what would become one of America's most notorious serial killer investigations.

Over the years, the case remained unsolved

until 2023 when architect Rex Hewerman was arrested after authorities linked him to the murders

through DNA evidence, burner phones and a renewed task force investigation. In April of this year,
