And the On the hot New York City afternoon of June 26th, 1897, a handful of boys were swimming in the East River, just south of the abandoned dock at the foot of East 11th Street.

Two of the boys, Jimmy McKenna and Jack McGuire, saw a bundle of some kind in the water a short distance away.

They couldn't tell what it was, but it was a bundle of something that might be good,

and even in the 19th century, the Finders' Keepers Rule applied.

So they swam over, snagged the package, and found it was oil cloth, tied with good strong twine.

They borrowed a knife from one of their pals when they got to shore and Jack hacked at the string.

The blade, the knife, became stuck though, and he struggled to remove it.

And as he did, he caught a glimpse of something white inside the package and then the

package began to bleed. The cloth was peeled away to reveal something wrapped in burlap. The oil

revealing another layer beneath of more dirty burlap.

Jack kept cutting and found another layer of this time dry coarse brown paper.

He yanked it away and the gathered boys froze for a moment.

In the package were two human arms attached to a man's torso.
