Welcome to the trial UK at the Liverpool Parade. I'm Caroline Cheatham and I'm Liz Hall.

Liz, we're recording this extra episode ahead of the sentencing next week of Paul Doyle. And that's because

since Paul Doyle pleaded guilty a few weeks ago,

at the last minute really before his trial was about to begin. And we heard a little bit about

what had happened that day. Certainly his behaviour behind the wheel as he, we were told,

knocked people down like skittles really in the middle of the city centre.

We've been trying to work out why.

And because, really, there's no trial, we may find something out next week in the sentencing,

but we just have been questioning why.

What caused this family man, you know, not a massive football fan

either. It was that day in the city he was doing some friends of favour, taking them in and picking

them up again. What caused him to flip? And we had an idea and that was to chat to Professor David Wilson.

He is obviously a criminologist and a friend of the podcast.

And Liz, he had some really interesting theories.

And in fact, when we got hold of him, he was actually about to get hold of us

because he'd been following the case.

And he had some real concerns about what he'd heard

from our coverage and from the coverage elsewhere as well. Yeah. So like you said, Caroline,

because there was no trial, we obviously aren't going to hear from Paul Doyle directly.

We're probably never going to hear from him to know exactly why he did what he

did. So like he said, we spoke to David Wilson and he actually has got a theory really about

why this seemingly ordinary bloke flipped on that day and committed what is, you know, an
