I'm Brian Hyatt. This is Rolling Stone, music now. We started off with

one of Shneed O'Connor's final recordings. That's her singing Mehelia Jackson's trouble of the world.

Shenet O'Connor died this week at the two young age of 56 and this episode is

dedicated to her memory. I'll be talking with one of the many

artists she inspired, Shirley Manson of Garbage. And we'll also hear from

David Wilde who interviewed Shnead for Rolling Stone cover story in 1991.

Shene O'Connor arrived to fame at age 21 with an unbelievably brutal childhood just behind her.

Her mother was mentally ill and frightfully abusive. O'Connor spent time in a sort of

reform school-like group home in her teens where she got her first guitar

lessons. She was never shy about her influences. She loved Bob Dylan

perhaps most of all. She said his

song got to serve somebody to find the type of music she wanted to make and that

the most famous protest of her career, ripping up the Pope's picture on

Saturday Night Live, would have never

have happened without the message of that song.

She loved Van Morrison, Kate Bush, which you can definitely hear in her more ethereal and

scinty moments, even Barbara Streisand. She loved Bob Marley and had a deep affinity for reggae and

Rastafarianism in general. She was a huge and really an early supporter of hip-hop.

all the way back in 1988.
