Hello, I'm John Fornoff.

Thanks for joining me tonight for Sleep Scriptures as we hear the letter of 1 John in the new international version.

This message to the church is usually attributed to the Apostle John, the author of the

Gospel of John, but he only refers to himself here as the elder.

In his letters, John was responding to a crisis that the church was facing.

A group of people had broken off from the church and denied Jesus as Messiah and the Son of God.

John's goal was to encourage the church to stay true to what they believed.

John said that as an eyewitness to Jesus, it was his duty to share the message of the

gospel with others, so they could be brought into fellowship with him.

In fellowship, we can participate in God's light and life.

We do this by walking in the light,

which is keeping Jesus' commands to love one another.

John explains that as God's children, we have victory over the darkness in the world.

We shouldn't love the world, but should watch out for those who would deceive us.
