On October 6th, 1909, a woman was hanged for the crime she

committed against the children in her care. And though she said she was helping the children,

many believe her motive was simply the difficulty of being a stepmother. So if you like your

Martha Randell was born on August 10, 1871, and, in the early 1900s, moved to Perth to

follow a man called Thomas Morris, who had fled with his family

to escape a scandal. You see, Thomas and Martha had begun an affair back in Adelaide, and after

separating from his wife, the couple grabbed his children and planted roots in a place where

no one knew about their sordid love affair. Posing as his wife,

with the children even calling her mother, Martha, according to some of the sources, left behind

her own family and children, described as illegitimate, to begin her life anew with Thomas.

Though the pair were never legally married, divorce was, of course, too scandalous and

expensive, they lived as de facto husband and wife, convincing everyone in their new city that they

were the picture of domestic bliss. At least, that's how it seemed on the outside. On the inside,

the fiercely independent woman grew tired
