Mary Cecilia Rogers was born sometime in 1820 in Lyme, Connecticut.

Though her birth records unfortunately did not survive the test of time,

we do know that she grew up to be a beautiful young woman,

raised by her widowed mother after her father died in a steamboat explosion

when Mary was just 17 years old.

At the age of 20, Mary was living in the boarding house run by her mother,

and that her young beauty grew into a gorgeousness that became the talk of her neighborhood.

So much so that when she took a job as a clerk at a tobacco shop in New York City,

she brought in so much male clientele that the owner, John Anderson,

paid her much more than what was expected for a woman living in the 1800s.
