Herschel Woody Williams is a World War II veteran who served during the Battle of Iwo Jima

in the Pacific. He is the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient

to have fought in that battle.

What he was given the award for his heroism

above and beyond the call of duty,

notably by stepping forward alone

with a 70-pound flamethrower

to attempt the reduction of devastating machine gun fire

and detonations.

When receiving the Medal of Honor in 1945, holding back tears, Woody dedicated the award to those

who died. He said, quote, this medal doesn't belong to me. It belongs to them because they gave their

lives for me.

At 95 years old, he continues to serve his country with the Herschel Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, which helps raise awareness and support for Gold Star families across the country.
